After comedian John Witherspoon (who played Granddad on the show) let slip that “The Boondocks is coming back” during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2019, rumors began The series returned to our screens in a full reboot back in October – after rumours that it would return for a fifth season circulated, with McGruder at the helm.

The beloved animated sitcom initially aired on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block for four seasons from 2005 to 2014, with McGruder’s involvement not going into the final season. The creator and the producer split over scheduling issues related to the production timetable.

The Boondocks, as previously said, came to an end in 2014. But now comes the time for a reboot, which many people confuse with the fifth season. So, here’s the deal: HBO Max is planning a revival of The Boondocks. There are plans to release the reboot version in 2022.

The Boondocks will be available on HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s future streaming service, for two seasons at the moment. Season one will feature twelve episodes, while season two should have the same number of episodes.

Woodcrest, a fictional suburb predominantly populated by white families, begins with the arrival of the Freemans, a black family. It follows them as they oppose Uncle Ruckus’ regime, which governs over the community government.

In the imaginary city of Woodcrest, we watch the Freemen interacting with society. The suburb is virtually entirely white, but the Freemen get along swimmingly. Development: The Boondocks

The first season of The Boondocks aired on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim on November 6, 2005, and lasted four seasons and 55 episodes, ending on June 23, 2014. McGruder took a 6-month vacation from the strip during its first season, commencing in March 2006. He did not return to the comic the following November, and the strip’s syndicate, Universal Press Syndicate, confirmed his departure.

Charlamagne Tha God’s Instagram page has a series of one-shots. McGruder resurrected the comic strip on Instagram on February 6, 2019, with the support of former supervising director Seung Eun Kim. On Joe Rogan’s 1305th episode of The Joe Rogan Experience on May 29, 2019, voice actor John Witherspoon revealed that the series would return. Producers are unsure how the show will continue after Witherspoon’s death on October 29, 2019. At Annecy 2019, Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Television announced that they would co-produce a “reimagining” of The Boondocks. 

On September 18, 2019, WarnerMedia’s new streaming service HBO Max announced that the revival had been picked up for a two-season order. McGruder will return as showrunner and act as executive producer alongside Norm Aladjem of Mainstay Entertainment and Seung Kim and Meghann Collins Robertson. In 2022, the series will begin with a 50-minute special. There will be twelve episodes in each season.
